The Ultimate Guide to Whale Watching in Hermanus

Noel Travel Tours February 01, 2026

Hermanus is the whale-watching capital of the world. Here's everything you need to know about the best time to visit, what to expect, and how to make the most of your whale watching experience.

Why Hermanus Is the World's Best Whale Watching Destination

Every year, between June and November, Southern Right Whales make the long journey from their Antarctic feeding grounds to the sheltered waters of Walker Bay near Hermanus. This charming coastal town, just 120 kilometres from Cape Town, offers some of the best land-based whale watching on the planet.

What makes Hermanus truly special is how close the whales come to shore. From the famous cliff-top walking path, you can watch mothers and calves playing, breaching, and lobtailing just 20 to 50 metres from the rocks. It's an awe-inspiring spectacle that draws visitors from around the world.

When to Visit

The whale season officially runs from June to November, with peak activity in September and October. During these months, it's common to see dozens of whales in Walker Bay at any given time. The Hermanus Whale Festival, held in late September, is a celebration of all things whale with live music, food stalls, and eco-activities.

Best Viewing Spots

The Cliff Path stretches for 12 kilometres along the Hermanus coast, offering numerous vantage points. Some of the best spots include:

  • Gearing's Point — the most popular viewpoint with easy access
  • Sievers Point — slightly less crowded, equally rewarding
  • The Old Harbour — combine whale watching with a visit to the museum
  • Grotto Beach — watch whales from the sand with Table Mountain on the horizon

Boat-Based Whale Watching

For a more immersive experience, several licensed operators offer boat trips into Walker Bay. Boats maintain a respectful distance, but the whales are famously curious and often approach the vessels. There's nothing quite like locking eyes with a 15-metre whale from water level.

What Else to Do in Hermanus

Hermanus is far more than just whales. The town offers excellent wine estates in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley (known for world-class Pinot Noir and Chardonnay), shark cage diving from nearby Gansbaai, superb hiking trails, and a wonderful selection of restaurants and artisan shops.
